Carbon sequestration of forest ecosystems is critical. These ecosystems comprise a large portion of the global carbon budget and are important in developing adaptation plans for the changing climate. The scientific and management communities have an increased need for a reference book on this topic. As leaders in carbon cycle science, Lorenz and Lal (both, Ohio State) developed this timely work to illustrate the science of the carbon cycle, its dynamics in forest ecosystems, the roles of human and natural disturbances on carbon fluxes, the total storage and pools of carbon in different types of forests, and resource limitations on carbon sequestration. The authors also address the broader impacts of carbon sequestration on other emerging challenges facing society, including developing bioenergy systems, international policy, conserving old-growth forests, and more. Each comprehensive chapter is organized in hierarchical sections that highlight key concepts, take-home messages, challenges, and relevant references.
