Many have highly beneficial effects on crop growth and productivity, others are pathogens causing diseases and losses to yield and quality, a few microbes offer protection from these pathogenic forms and others have little or no effect. These intimate and often complex inter-relationships are being explored with increasing success providing exciting opportunities for increasing crop yields and quality in sustainable harmony with the populations of beneficial soil microbes and to the detriment of pathogens. Sustainable agriculture is a significant topic in the discussion of how Earth will feed its growing population. A book exploring the ecosystem functions of soil microorganisms would be a timely contribution to that discussion. Unfortunately, this compilation of reviews does not meet that need. The chapters are often detached from their application to sustainable agriculture, as exemplified by the discussion of the fine genetics of symbioses in chapter 5. Although erudite, these chapters usually do not reveal how the system works at a scale useful to either students or practitioners. A common flaw in all chapters is the failure, after summarizing various studies, to take a stand on how soil microbiology could be made to work in sustainable agricultural systems. The selection of topics and the internal organization of the chapters appear to have been left to the discretion of the authors with the result that the text lacks continuity and coverage is selective. Illustrations are lacking in most chapters after the first few pages and are often badly prepared. The result is a text-heavy summary of isolated studies. Summing Up: Not recommended. M. S.
