This updated and revised third edition of the leading reference volume on distance metrics includes new items from very active research areas in the use of distances and metrics such as geometry, graph theory, probability theory and analysis. Among the new topics included are, for example, polyhedral metric space, nearness matrix problems, distances between belief assignments, distance-related animal settings, diamond-cutting distances, natural units of length, Heidegger's de-severance distance, and brain distances.

The publication of this volume coincides with intensifying research efforts into metric spaces and especially distance design for applications. Accurate metrics have become a crucial goal in computational biology, image analysis, speech recognition and information retrieval.

Encyclopedia of Distances is a revision of the earlier Dictionary of Distances (2006). The preface notes that about one-third of the definitions are new, and that most of the others have been revised. This volume is not what the title seems to imply. Instead of being a layperson's handbook of various measured distances between relative points, it is a rigorous treatment of the concept of distances in various mathematical disciplines such as topology, metric spaces, geometry, probability, number theory, string theory, and applied mathematics. Toward the end of the encyclopedia several chapters address the definition of distances in other areas of the sciences including astronomy, biology, geography, relativity, and even some of the social sciences. Non-mathematicians will find these chapters more approachable, but the chapters represent a small portion of the encyclopedia. This work appears to be well researched and sound from a scholarly point of view, but the audience is very limited and the price is extremely high. This volume is suitable only for institutions with graduate programs in mathematics. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students through professionals/practitioners. J. O.
